What We Believe

"What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us." - A.W. Tozer

Core Beliefs

The following are the core beliefs of Compass Community Church based on the foundational truths taught in the bible. All of our teaching and ministry is rooted in and flows out of these biblical doctrines.

ABOUT SCRIPTURE

We believe that the bible was authored by mankind but inspired by God.
(2 Timothy 3:16)

ABOUT GOD

We believe that God is the creator of the world and exists in three unique persons - God the Father, God the  Son  (Jesus), and God the Holy Spirit who are one in essence.
(2 Corinthians 13:14; Philippians 2:5-11)

ABOUT JESUS

We believe that Jesus is the son of God who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born to the virgin Mary.
(Matthew 1:18-23; 3:17; 8:29)

ABOUT THE HOLY SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit indwells the body and life of every believer at the time of their salvation.
(John 16:7-13; 1 Corinthians 12:12-13)

ABOUT THE DEVIL

The devil is real. His desire is to destroy us because of the relationship we have with Jesus Christ. We also believe that Jesus has defeated the devil and his wicked schemes and we have the ability to defeat the devil because of our relationship with Jesus Christ.
(Ephesians 6:12; James 4:7; 1 Peter 5:6; 1 John 3:8; Revelations 20:10)

ABOUT BAPTISM

Christian baptism is the immersion of a believer in water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. It is an outward expression to others that something inward has taken place.
(Matthew 3:13-17)

ABOUT COMMUNION / THE LORD'S SUPPER

Communion/The Lord’s Supper was modeled by Jesus with His disciples and left for followers of Christ to practice when they come together.
(Matthew 26:26-30)

ABOUT ETERNITY

We believe that heaven and hell are real places, which are experienced in eternity, apart from the world we now live in.
(Matthew 16:27; Luke 12:40; James 5:8; Revelation 3:11)

ABOUT THE CHURCH

We believe that the church is God’s vehicle by which Christ ministers through relationships, serves the disadvantaged, heals the brokenhearted, evangelizes the gospel and develops people into a greater sense of maturity in Christ.
(Matthew 16:15-19; Ephesians 1:22-23)

ABOUT SALVATION

We believe that salvation is a gift of God by His will alone, whereby the believer receives eternal security in Him.
(Romans 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 16:1-4; Ephesians 2:1-10)

ABOUT STEWARDSHIP

God is the source of all blessings, temporal and spiritual; all that we have and are we owe to Him. We should give regularly for the advancement of God’s kingdom here on earth.
(Genesis 14:20; Malachi 3:8-12; 12:1-2; 1 Corinthians 16:1-4)

ABOUT GENDER

People are the special creation of God, made in God’s image. He created them male and female as the crowning work of His creation. In God’s creation, He created each gender with body parts that fit and support the gender he made them to be.
(Genesis 1:26-30; Psalms 8:3-6; 1 Corinthians 1:21-31)

ABOUT MARRIAGE

Marriage is the uniting of one (natural born) man and one (natural born) woman in covenant commitment for a lifetime. It is God's unique gift to provide for the man and the woman in marriage the framework for intimate companionship, the channel of sexual expression according to biblical standards, and the means for procreation of the human race.
(Genesis 1:27; Ephesians 5:21-33)

ABOUT SEX

Sex is a gift given by God to take place in the relationship between a (natural born) man and a (natural born) woman after they have been married. Through this gift given by God, a husband and a wife are able to procreate and bring forth children, therefore, creating a family under God.
(1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 1 Corinthians 6:18; Romans 1:26-27)

ABOUT OUR BODIES

We have been created by God. When we have made the decision to join in relationship with Jesus Christ, our bodies are not ours anymore; they belong to God. Therefore, we need to take care of this earthly body that we reside in while here on earth.
(Psalm 139:13-14; 1 Corinthians 6:18-20; Colossians 3:5-8; Galatians 5:16-24; Ephesians 5:18)

ABOUT PEACE WITH OTHERS

We believe that we are supposed to be at peace with all mankind. God desires for us to be peaceful people, for us to express peace to others and for us to be leaders of peace within our spaces. This should come across in the way we act towards others and the way in which we manage conflict when it arises.
 (1 Timothy 5:13; Romans 1:29-31; Matthew 18:15-17)

ABOUT RACE AND CULTURE

God created all people. When we make the decision to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, we all become brothers and sisters in Christ. We all are different from color, culture, economics, experiences, where we live, what we do and how we live. Jesus Christ is the determining factor that makes us all one.
(1 Corinthians 12:12-14; 1 John 2:11; Ephesians 2:14-16)

ABOUT GOD'S JEALOUSY AND OUR BUSY WORLD

We live in a busy world that seeks to distract our attention away from God. These distractions come in the way of materialism, the things we do to and with our body, the news and through social media. These
distractions also try to become idols in our lives. God is a jealous God and seeks to be seen, understood and worshiped as the only God in our lives. God desires to be the head of our actions, attention and our focus.
(1 Timothy 6:20-21; Exodus 20:5; Exodus 34:14)
